minor issue/adjustment GUI

Hi,
Two items concerning the GUI:
1) when replacing text by pressing the replace-all button( bottom right in v13) and the entered search string( bottom left) is not explicitly activated( by pressing ENTER) the replace will fail. The replace obviously requires a activated search. Propose to do an initial search when activating the replace function if the search-field has changed.
2) when reopening the GUI the order of the editor-windows (tabs) is lost. I use a preferred editor-windows order which gets mixed up when reopening basex. So I have to reorder them again. It would be nice for those who prefer their editor-windows in a specific order if this order wuld be preserved when reopening basex .

I'd like to add a vote in favour of Rob's item 2. Stable editor tab order when reopening the GUI would be very welcome from this corner.
I would also like to put in a request for "editor does folding"; being able to collapse function definitions or blocks of comments into single lines would be really helpful for readability. Which I realize is a large ask but perhaps the available built-in support for the idea in the Java tool set has increased.

I'd also like to add a vote in favor of Rob's item 1 of some kind of improvement to the search / replace function. I find it less intuitive than the search/replace function in other editors, so I tend not to use it unless I really want a global search / replace. It would be nice to be able to step through each instance found by the search and choose whether to replace or skip. This might already be possible, but I'm not sure how to do it.
Many thanks,
Vincent

Hi Vincent,
I fully agree. We have spent a lot of time in improving Search&Replace: In more recent snapshots, you can replace strings one by one. In addition, Search&Replace is also available globally across your project (incl. regex search). All feedback is welcome.
Best,
Christian

This one might take some more time; it’s more complex to implement than it may seem. We use our own text editor/renderer, as it allows you to edit MB-sized documents (which is mostly impossible with other Java default components and libraries you’ll find).

Thank you!
I understand that folding is hard and folding efficiently is harder.
For another "I bet this is harder than it sounds", the Dark Mode "this is the thing you searched for" highlighting is a little too subtle to be easily seen, at least with my old eyes. ("FlatMacDarkLaf", specifically.) So far as I can tell, there isn't a user means of adjusting this without having a major learning experience and creating a new theme. Some means of adjustment would be welcome.

Dear all,
I'd suggest a better support for hi-resolution monitors because I always need to scale and tweak my monitor setting in order to avoid seeing minuscule icons and unreadable messed up menus.
In addition, if shortcuts are in scope, few keyboard shortcuts ...
* As ctrl+enter runs a query if it is a main menu I'd like a ctrl+enter to "repo install" a file if it is a "library" module and maybe something similar to run the unit tests if any.
* a ctrl+shift+d for emitting to the editor the string "declare variable ${current-module-ns-prefix}:"
* a ctrl+shift+f for emitting to the editor the string "declare function {current-module-ns-prefix}:function(){};"
Sounds to custom? :-)
Ciao,
Marco.

Hi Rob,
(For everyone:) We have put substantial effort into improving code completion. It is context-sensitive now and includes function and variable declarations from the current module [1].

Done (the actual bug was a hidden one, but I’ll spare you all the details). If not, let me know.

In principle, the BaseX GUI is already HiDPI-aware, but its effectiveness depends on the OS. Could you provide us with a screenshot (in private, if you like) or details on your OS scaling factor, monitor setup, etc?
The FlatLAF library can be used to define custom UI scales [1].

I would probably need more information on how you think this could work. I tend to store single XQuery library modules directly in the `repo/` (sub)directories, without using all the repo machinery.

You can already use (Ctrl/Cmd)-Shift-Enter to run tests in a file or directory.

With the prefixes `fun..` or `var...` and Ctrl-Space (or by just waiting, with the latest snapshot), the presented code completion provides you with offers for function/variable declarations. I liked your idea to include the prefix of the current module namespace in the completion strings; check out the latest snapshot [2]…

I was just taught there is an easy way to scale everything in the BaseX GUI. You can add…
-Dsun.java2d.uiScale=3
…in the basexgui script.

The issue is complex. I'll try to reproduce as many combinations as possible of the cartesian product tried so far: adding
-Dsun.java2d.uiScale, Scale settings at OS level, Enabling or not fractional scaling, Changing aspect ratio of the screen (which is currently what I'm using to achieve an acceptable configuration).
I'm on Ubuntu 26.04 with wayland and GPU support.
As for the repo install: we have our XQuery code organized in several Git repositories. Somewhere (mostly in containers) there is a Basex running as a http server. We have command line tools for installing everything the first time. Then we start the GUI from any location (configuring the base file folder and the repo location as properties) in order to edit the files inside the git repos. When we edit a library module we have to reinstall it to make all other dependant code aware of the changes. This usually happens by copying the full path from the file tree going to the command input of the ui and typing repo install the/full/path. After the first time it's a matter of selecting the correct repo install command and re-executing it with the play button. This feels just a bit cumbersome. So instead I'd like to press "ctrl-s" and "ctrl-other" to save and reinstall because especially when tuning or debugging this happens a lot. I've tried to manage everything with copying, then softlinks then volumes ... but in all cases it ends up with a mess so reinstalling a module in the repo just feels like the best choice.
Hope it's clear.
Great to hear about ctrl-space improvements and sorry for not being aware of ctrl-shift-enter for running tests (will put it to immediate usage)!
Thanks!
M.

I have added an option in the GUI Preferences dialog to change the scaling factor sun.java2d.uiScale. This is helpful if the choice of the OS is not reliable.

Hi Christian,
Using BaseX130-20260729.200352.zip the editor, Result, and Info panes in the GUI keep the default formatting despite a dark theme; the frame and the top row of database icons, the project view, and the editor tabs get dark mode from the theme (FlatMacDarkLaf). If I switch to the default them, everything gets default. (white background, etc.)
At least locally, the top row of icons is very dark. (Can I attach screenshots on the mailing list?)
It's a very small thing, but the `data/` directory has a `.logs` directory in it which makes it hard to use rmdir on `data/` as part of the "this will be a symlink" installation process.
Thanks!

Maybe the
LOGPATH option will help you. If not, you could try to create a data symlink before you start BaseX for the first time.GS

That works! Much much easier to see the search results. (and the current line.) Thank you!
I was unclear about the `.logs`; when I unzip the zip, in this case BaseX130-20260731.012633.zip but generally for this last while, `basex/data/.logs` is present. It hasn't got anything in it. I am hoping that it doesn't need to be there when the zip archive gets created.

Hello all,
one more thing that feels a bit uncomfortable. If I want to open a given folder in the project view when navigating to the folder I necessarily have to stop at folder selection as shown in picture 1.
If I enter the folder and then press ok the path that is fed to the project view contains twice the folder so in this case (pciture 2) ti would point to /tmp/tmp thus resulting in nothing appears. I don't think it has always been like that because I never noticed it.
When entering a folder in the selection the path should somehow avoid re-attaching the folder name because the semantic is I want to stay in this current directory. Isn't it?
Regards,
Marco.

This seems to be a GTK-only issue. I couldn’t test it, but I hope the latest snapshot provides a fix [1].

Isn't it? Regards, Marco.
