| Specifies the serialization method. {{Code|xml}}, {{Code|xhtml}}, {{Code|html}}, {{Code|text}}, {{Code|json}}, and {{Code|adaptive}} are adopted from the official specification. The following methods are specific to BaseX:* The method {{Code|basex}} is used as default: Items of binary type are output in their native byte representation. For all other types, the items’ string values are returned. Function items (including maps and arrays) are output just like with the [[XQuery 3.1#Adaptive Serialization|adaptive]] method.* {{Code|csv}} allows you are specific to output XML nodes as CSV data BaseX (see the [[CSV ModuleXQuery Extensions#Serialization|XQuery Extensions]] for more details).
